One of those free-fall things. Managed to get it working again. But these folks had welded the pinion onto the motor shaft. I told him that if the motor dies, it's time for a new windlass. Kind of a shame, as the thing is built like a Mack truck - triple reduction, all ball bearings, etc. With the pinion welded in place, I'm not sure you could even get to the motor brushes!
