In a macro sense, any energy extracted from the fluid flow will result in a change in the velocity field for that fluid, exactly as Newton would have predicted had he known anything about aerodynamics. On the other hand the lift of an asymmetric airfoil set at zero angle of attack cannot be explained without viscosity in the fluid and circulation theories. Other models, such as the lifting line theories, require infinite vortices and such like that don't actually exist.

Its best not to get to bogged down or married to one particular model unless you are very deep into a corner of it. Gentry was married to the circulation theory and very deep into a corner of it. Its really no more incorrect to say that the wind is deflected than to talk about superposition of circulation fields - they are two mathematical models that may or may not be appropriate under different circumstances.
