better to have a breaker trip than smell smoke. I am pretty sure there is a fuse in my Yanmar harness that would have prevented the problem you had, but reading your post has convinced me to check to be sure. Thanks.

  - You're correct in that the wire that burned is the line that energizes the alt field through the regulator.
