What you suggest is the best way to do it. In

the electrical industry they call that a "carrot splice". My only suggestions are not to cut a short piece of wire but to simply strip your wire back double what you would normally do and then bend it back upon itself to fill the the extra space. After you nut and bolt the three togather, wrap them with rubber tape for moisture protection and then cover that with the black electrical tape. You will have a connection that will last for years with the advantage that you can take it apart later.
