Thanks... I didn't really see this recommendation anywhere in the manual...

but as I said, that is what I have typically done too.

When sailing, what do you do with your engine transmission? Reverse/Neut/what?
Yanmar advise's to put it in reverse when sailing...

I put mine in reverse but I have folding prop
reverse to fold the prop, then neutral
I have a MaxProp feathering prop and I do what Tim does ... Cheers, John
Into reverse to fold the prop, hang the key on gear shift to remember before restarting engine
Why would you leave the gear in reverse?
If you don't have a feathering or folding prop, then the prop will start to free wheel (unless you're going too slow).
My response was to a poster who has a folding prop.
Ahh, I didn't notice that :^)
Here's what Hurth says
folding prop
I leave it in reverse out of habit
Atomic 4 in Tartan 30
I put mine in reverse..
What Todd says!!!
I put mine in forward - Autoprop...
Here's the official word from Yanmar
Wow, that changes everything. Thanks
As you hear your prop free wheeling ... remember, Yanmar takes no responsiblity for your cutlass bearing, shaft seal/
but with the gear in reverse it's a brake.
Doesn't make any sense to me either. If in reverse it's stopped. Free-wheeling's got to be worse for the tranny.
It is a brake -- but not a real brake
I have to do that
I spoke w/ Mack Boring (after trying the Yanmar number and being referred) -- Surprise, to me...
Crappy engineering
This is why I like the Hurth transmission....
Curious about "Tyr that with a Yanmar"
Most Yanmars actually have a Kanzaki transmission...
I suppose they vary by engine model
That's odd - it is exactly opposite from what the distributor told me to do
