most of the stories I collected had to do with the Yanmar saildrive, which is not well thought of. These had cone clutches that would fail very quickly with higher rev shifts, and the manual specifically stated that the warrantee would be void if shifted above idle. It was such a problem that they had specific specs for the moment of inertia of the props and required cushioned hubs with Yanmar approval. The saildrives have a host of other problems too.
The Hurth is a multi-disk wet clutch transmission (similar to most motorcycle clutches and automatic transmissions) that applies the torque somewhat gradually compared to cone clutches.
