Any portable generator you run at anchor will make more noise than an installed marine diesel one.
As a suggestion to anyone using a portable gasoline generator. Don't put it at the bow so it's quieter. Put it at the stern of your cockpit. If others have to put up with the noise so should you. The bonus you get by putting it near the stern is that since the bow will be pointing into the wind all the fumes will be already behind you.
Secondly, cut the darn thing off 1/2 hour before sunset. Run it during the day to charge the batteries or whatever and use your inverter from near sunset till the morning.
