Not that I wouldn't go more often if time permitted. But upon returning for little more than a 2 week cruise from Maine to Cape Cod and back, I was amazed I'd burned about 50 gallons of diesel while only covering a bit less than 600 nm.
Having sailed the trip down, I felt I'd sailed quite a bit. In reality, I'd only supplemented my powering a little to get about 10 nm/ gallon of fuel on miles traveled by sailboat. That's little better than if I had left the sails at home!
That also meant we'd spent about 75% of our time under power during the 2 weeks.
When I compare that to sailing close to home in Penobscot Bay, I estimate my mileage(combined sailing/motoring) over a season at closer to 25 nm/ gallon of diesel. Meaning simply, we spend a majority of time under sail during the season with motoring confined mostly to in and out of harbors and windless(rare here) conditions. With an overnight, weekend or a week and not far to go, we can let the wind set our itinerary. That's a real luxury. Batteries are rarely above 80% during season.
We had a schedule to keep on this 2 week vacation. We also had a few places we wanted to visit so we couldn't let the wind call the shots as we'd prefer. It's all good of course and I don't mind powering, some.
Sailing is a real luxury to me that's not that easy to attain if I have to get somewhere I've found.
