to Las Hadas. It was suppose to just be an over-nighter and in by dusk. Right prior to sundown the wind and seas really came up and we were beating into 25 to 30 knots motor sailing. I fell off a bit trying to get some more drive out of the single reefed main but that only caused me to close with the coast that much faster. I decided to heave-to but after a few minutes of putzing around with the sails and wheel I set her up to to fore reach off shore at about 1 knot. Maybe it was a knot and a half but no more. We stayed that way from about 1800 hrs. to 0100 the next morning when seas started to lay down. The wind had dropped off around 2200 hrs. but it didn't make any sense to beat into it so we just waited it out. We ended up 7 or 8 miles off the coast which just gave us a better angle on the wind when we finely go going again. I just lay in the pilot house watching the radar, chart plotter and wind repeater while Denny went down below and got some sleep. We didn't get into Las Hadas until 2200 hrs that night. Not one of our better trips. If you have room and the situation is right, fore-reaching is great. It also makes you feel like your not totally wasting your time. Even if it is only a few miles.
