Bermuda or the Caribbean, not having the engine can become a problem, particularly single handing. As with most of us, I run my auto pilot, frig, etc off the battery. I tend to run the engine for about 45 minutes twice a day when at sea to get the batteries at 90% charged when the engine is shut off after charging. But if the starter failed, I'd like to have another plan to get the engine started if possible. Hence my question.
If I could not get it going, then I'd move quickly to Plan B. This plan calls for shutting just about everything off that draws current; frig , autopilot, instruments, etc. The Monitor would do the steering, the Garmin 76 GPS draws nothing so it would stay on, giving me location and speed and the running lights are LED, so they draw nothing too. Everything else would be off. I figure that I could draw as little as 24 amps per day or less in this way and go a good distance without running down the batteries.
