Both chainplates broke where you couldn't see them. Granted, neither guy took them out and have them checked but they both had months of negotiations before the final word was no by the insurance company. Both companies said that chainplates have a lifespan and should have been replaced. Same as standing rigging.
The money was one thing but the hassle of waiting for them to make up their minds taking months wasn't worth it.
If the entire rig is documented and parts replaced as necessary it makes life easier.
