He has an 84 Cheoy Lee. He had the standing rigging replaced and the chainplates visually checked but not taken out. The replacing of the rigging was for an updated insurance survey. The insurance co. asked him to replace them. They didn't mention the chainplates.
He went out on a blustery day and the upper starboard broke in the middle of the deck where it couldn't be seen. The top half of the rig came down and he made it back to the slip.
He put in an insurance claim and fought with them for months till it was rejected.
Granted,,, the chainplatres werent taken out and checked but then the insurance co. looked at the survey and asked him to do what the surveyor suggested. He did.
I honestly don't know if the surveyor mentioned taking out the chainplates to check them but then I've had 4 surveys done on TD and no surveyor suggested that either. They only ask about the standing rigging. I just replaced the plates myself... Actually put in the backstay chainplate today.
