Bearings ...

It is my understanding that bearings that are rolling are at less chance of brinneling than those that are stationary so a moving bearing, as in furling under load, could actually be less detrimental than just the loads from sailing with the bearings stationary. We have reefed all kinds of Torlon bearing furlers from Furlex to Harken and never had a single issue. In fact the only bearings I have seen replaced on a modern furler were a race of Furlex sealed bearings that ceased to work after a number of years. Last time I spoke with John Harries he claims he has over 100k nm on his Harken furler. That's pretty darn good considering the amount of high latitude stuff he does. I think Harken has shown Torlon to be quite resilient.. All of the big name furlers are excellent quality IMHO Schaefer, Furlex, Harken & Pro Furl and you can reef all of them. I've owned all of them at one point or another plus Hood and CDI. The CDI furler was the only crappy one of the lot the rest were all great performers. I currently have a Harken but have no brand loyalty to any of them this one just had the features I wanted, this time around. Next boat it could be a Pro-Furl or Furlex again or Harken or Scahefer, they're all good...
