Thanks for input men-- Dan, I sail exclusively coastwise, with an occasional jaunt to the Bahamas. No real deep anchorages for me. I'd rather the simpler to deal with short length of chain to protect against bottom chafe, and the lighter, easier to work around my windlass, nylon. If I were to sail off into the Med or Pacific, of course I would choose all chain.
I don't want to have to deal with a chain snubber every time I anchor, so that's why I don't want to put too long a chain in the rode. If I anchor in 15 ft, and use 5 to one scope, I let out 20 feet of chain and 55 ft of rode. This way I don't need to have chain on the boat while anchored. Just lazy, I suppose, but this combo has worked for me for years with no dragging in some nasty storms!
I am debating trying one of the new Manson Supreme's this season (presently have CQR 45#-- thinking of new 60# Manson). Why not open up to the plusses and minuses of these realtively newcomers??
