Where you anchor is your first line of defense against dragging. But I'm a mostly coastal sailor that can choose my anchorages usually ahead of time and not spend much time in open roadsteads.
I remember one night in Willsborough Bay on Lake Champlain after our clubs big annual race. With everyone ashore, and well celebrated,... the wind shifted and went hard out of the north. I think about every anchored boat in the race, dragged! What a show that was! I can still see it!
The only thing saved us, it was a summer squall, and died quickly.
