I did some searching on the web
In Response To: The best way to join is RF cable is with connectors ()
and the consensus is what you describe. I'll be putting a male Pl-259 on each end and use a barrel connector and cover the whole thing to make it waterproof.
This'll speed up the stepping process which I'm sure the crane operator will appreciate.
