You can make your own scanner and make your own e-books. On our boat, we have about 1,500 E-books (on 1, that is JUST ONE, CD). We pick up and read a LOT of paperbacks along the way, but LOVE our e-readers for all types of other reading, or just when we run out of paperbacks after a month at anchor. We also have most of our boat equipment on our ereaders.
