My used boat came (10 years ago) with an old Navico TillerPilot that has taken its last breath. Needs replacement, and would appreciate input on the following:
Raymarine and Simrad appear to be the only manufacturers. The important parameter in choosing a model seems to be the boat's displacement, length being secondary. Raymarine's top two choices are spec'd for 13,000 lbs and 16,500 lbs; Simrad's top choice is rated at 12,600 lbs. My boat is 34', displacing nominally 12,500 lbs, but I carry at least 1,000 lbs of ground tackle, plus a lot of cruising gear and a hard dinghy offshore. All reading suggests it is false economy to buy an undersized unit. Following that rubric, the only unit mentioned that really fits the need is the high-end Raymarine, which happens to cost 3x as much as the high-end Simrad. Admittedly, the Raymarine appears to have more functionality, but having lived with the really simple Navico for 10 years, I am not convinced that all the bells and whistles would be an improvement. Any input welcome.
