I used to repair both units as a hobby...

and have gone through dozens of both. I started out with Raymarine because I was a big fan of the Autohelm pilots they evolved from - but Raymarine just kept finding ways to make the product cheaper and the repair parts more expensive. Ultimately I switched to Navico/Simrad (same co basically ) for my personal system.

The Navico 32 (same unit as the old Simrad 300) is rated for a 39 foot boat. I have one of each of these models, both with remotes, strangely enough the older 300 remote has a digital readout and the new 32 does not. These are very powerful tiller pilots, and regardless of Raymarine's claims, I can pretty much guarantee you the Navico will outperform and is more durable (by a long shot) than the Raymarines.

Properly installed, and cared for, both brands will give good service in ordinary circumstances - but in the dark and stormies I would prefer the Navico.

Keep in mind that I am only an expert on the internet
