Garmin said we had 10 feet of water yesterday, then I heard the rumble below from the rising centerboard.

We were under sail about to set our hook in Cradle Cove between Islesboro and 700 Acre Island. We know(thought...) the water well in there. Judging by the rumble below, we found 5' or 6'(phew) in the 10' band, and it's not sand.

I rechecked the GPS and Bluechart data. Sure enough, the bar we found is not on the chart. On our most detailed paper chart(we had one we use often in the bay in the cockpit), it doesn't show either.

At home I went to activecaptain out of curiosity and saw no mention, thinking I may post it. Even at it's most detailed the bar is not evident.

But at the hybrid setting, satellite or if you google earth, you can't miss it. The bar extends like a tongue visually out from the shore. Clearly an abrupt depth change.

For the sailor, the satellite photos are a nice compliment to chart data.
