Have you been to that part of the world?

When you say the French must love their boating, that's an understatement.
La Trinite and those places is where they trial a lot of the fancy big multihulls and the Vendee Globe boats. And they also have a huge passion for traditional boats.
I don't know what your travel plans are, but you can get to the region by TGV, then rent a car to poke around the coast. (Very civilized in France, you can rent a car for pickup at a train station!)

If you order a plateau de fruits de mer, you'll get something that looks like crowd in the Intergalactic Bar from Star Wars. It's all edible . . tho you might need a little wine to give you the courage to try some of the critters.
