When you say the French must love their boating, that's an understatement.
La Trinite and those places is where they trial a lot of the fancy big multihulls and the Vendee Globe boats. And they also have a huge passion for traditional boats.
I don't know what your travel plans are, but you can get to the region by TGV, then rent a car to poke around the coast. (Very civilized in France, you can rent a car for pickup at a train station!)
