If you take a lot of photos, you probably have some of these as well.
Motoring across the Gulf, this is the last shot(below) I could get with the setting sun. And you can see I couldn't steady the camera anyway.
See the lunar lighted path beginning to form ahead though?
A few hours later, 40 to 50 nm off the coast, the moon lit a shimmering broad path from the bow to the horizon in front of the boat. I was taking a "watch" between breaks standing on the veeberths with my head and shoulders through the overhead hatch.
The glittering path ahead was quite amazing to see then. I suppose with the right equipment you could capture it. Like a golden road ahead. But the next part would be hard to recreate.
As I watched, suddenly, an area ahead went dark. Then a shape began to rapidly rise and grow and grab the moonlight. It was an enormous shape.
In an instant, I was looking at the glossy arched back of a whale cutting through the shimmering moonlight, full tilt, just yards ahead.
The lunar light was completely different on the smooth whale as it powered through and back down below the surface. It looked electric in the moonlight. In an instant, the whale was gone.
I was momentarily stunned. Then I whooped as loud as I could. I couldn't help it.
