I use a standard 3-jaw gear puller. Using an impact wrench with it makes the job go much easier. I use short bursts with the wrench so shaft inertia can help isolate rotational impact from being transmitted to the transmission. I've seen boatyard guys strike the hub or nut with a hammer but I have concerns about what that can do to shaft alignment or transmission/oil seals. Rotational impact is probably kinder to the equipment.
