If the winch is loaded up without enough turns on the drum, the load on the stripper can get high enough to bend it against the drum. A friend likes using fat lines (easier on the hands, he says) but his main halyard winch isn't really big enough to take 3 full turns of fat line before the stripper, and he has a bent stripper. Rather than replace the stripper, he just ground down the top lip on the drum!
