First off this is not my photo, more here http://www.penbaypilots.com/gallery/ The tanker in the picture is heading up the Penobscot river for the paper mill in Bucksport where they make the glossy paper used in catalogs and magazines, among other types of paper.
Penobscot bay is busy with commercial traffic at all times of the year. The winter months are just as busy with fuel deliveries, salt and bulk carriers of all sorts. The Sprague terminal at Mack Point in Searsport is even the receiving point for virtually all the towers, blades and turbines for wind projects here in the northeast. The regular delivery of the coatings for the paper plant in Bucksport keep the pilots busy in the bay. My daughter went out with the pilot boat from Rockland last week for a vacation week assignment, my idea.....
