If there is no finish on it, I'd just give it a light sanding Max.

As Todd mentioned below, if it's a veneer you don't want to be too aggressive and go through the face. It shouldn't be a problem with fine paper in a palm sander. Are you putting a coating on it like varnish?

- Mine had multiple coats of varnish so I used a heat gun to peal them off
  - That's when a heat gun shines, very thick coats of varnish.
    - Yes, the heat gun is a good tool
