Yes, the heat gun is a good tool

I used my Wagner heat gun to remove several coats of varnish on the cabin sole of my 1982 Pearson Cutter. It is the way to go, no question. My Wagner gun is a high wattage one, so I have to be careful regarding scorching the wood. I found, though, that I had to come back with paint remover and steel wool to clean it. I then wipped it down with low-oder mineral spirits (with a fan running to clear the air). The results were amazing. Rather than use an expensive varnish, I used the tried-and-true Satan Minwax Polyurathane found almost anywhere. I reasoned that little if any sun gets to the sole for any length of time, so I wasn't too concerned with UV issues. I still have more to do and plan on starting it soon. With the weather here in Maryland, we are hibernating.

Good luck, Max
