Mahogany is a good deal these days. Get any rot resistant wood.

Teak would be nice, but costly. Ipe is rot resistant. Stay away from rot prone hardwoods like red oak. I think a lumberyard mahogany should be less than $10/bd ft.

That would be a good project to try out wood carving with some proper gouges Gene, looks straight forward. Might be fun.
