Circuit protection
In Response To: I wonder... ()

No yacht survey that I've seen addresses the adequacy of the electrical circuit protection. Too many boats have no protection on the main cable between the battery bank and the fuse or breaker panel. The panels usually have adequate protection for the cable leaving the panel, but further splitting of the load to smaller wire sizes seems to be ignored. As an example, the panel has a fuse for 'instruments' with a 15 amp fuse and #14 wire - fine. But this leads to a terminal block, where numerous instruments leads are powered, usually with smaller gauge wire - sometimes much smaller! So, you end up with the situation where the only thing protecting a #20 wire is a 15 amp fuse.
Well, gee, the owner says - if I add all those small fuses, I'll be replacing them all the time. Not true. A fuse will only blow or a breaker will only trip if it's overloaded. My main panel still has fuses, and I haven't replaced one in years. Still, replacing a fuse or resetting a breaker is a lot easier than replacing a boat.
