Hi Phil-
Check out our blog post.
While in Loreto for three nights, we really tapped into a great resource for nature photography and conservation efforts...
"Kirk dropped us off at the Cabanas de Loreto run by the Jacksons, Jill and Rick, honorary cousins, naturally. Rick is a talented photographer whose printshop is on the premises. His photos, including astonishing shots of rays and dolphins leaping out of the water, birds in flight and local scenes decorate the rooms."
Rick has been making a living as a nature photographer for over 30 years, so he must be good! We bought one of his photos, a copy of which was hanging in our room. Price with framing was very reasonable. You can find Richard Jackson Photography on the web if interested. Jill and Rick were great hosts. They even provided us with free bikes to ride flat roads around the town. Mellow traffic made biking fine.
We had calm conditions for periods when we were in the area around Loreto. We probably could have gotten away with anchoring off the town for a night, but there is absolutely no protection from any kind of weather. The marina is only for small boats, not a 43 footer. Instead, we paid the small fee for a mooring at Puerto Escondido for a few nights and treated ourselves to the B&B in Loreto and rented a car for a couple days. The Puerto Escondido mooring was not well maintained with one ply of the 3-strand chafed through on the pennant. We attached a few safety backups and counted on the prediction for settled weather to continue (it did).
