Every season I'm amazed by how beautiful it is on the water. So I try to get some fall foliage in the frame while sailing. It's not easy, and I still haven't put them together; sailing, foliage. I put the tripod on my aft deck(lashed it down to a cleat), used a 10mm lens which is wide enough to cover and focus on the boat and the background. Set the ISO to 100, shutter to 60th of sec(let the camera set the aperture which was around 22 with the good light). Then I set horizon level for what I guessed I'd heel, centered the frame to a point I thought I had in my mind, and I went sailing looking for the shot. Unfortunately, this is about as good as I got out of about 60 shots. The timer on 10 sec, I'd anticipate a good window, reach back and touch the shutter, then try to sail a good view, good sail trim, while counting, "one one thousand two one thous,...." Sometimes I miss counted and turned around too soon. I almost ran aground once.... One suirprise, 10mm shows some speed over the water. Note; more water in the frame next time. I kept hitting the shutter even as I furled the sail. I got a little foliage in this one.
Back at home with 80 so so shots on the screen, it then occurred to me what is always amazing about this time of the year, is simply the light. It's fantastic. Even at 3 in the afternoon, it's prime time for photos on the water. I took this one before leaving the boat. I can't bear to haul the boat yet(Sandy be damned).
