I thought of equalize too

That's an automatic function with this controller, and it happens periodically but (as I recall) the documentation is vague about what triggers it. Perhaps it was in equalize mode when I saw it, but there's no way it should have been in acceptance. The batteries are at 100% charge and immediately dropped to 13.8V when I disconnected the solar panel inputs.
