Come to think of it, my starting battery was near dead last winter.

I charge them in November, turn the master switches off, and don't touch them until May. I remember it read around 12 volts in May where as the house were each over 12.5(normal after the winter rest). I knew the starting battery was dead at that point, even though a charge would bring it up(for a while...).

I can tell the age of the batteries in relation to each other by their voltage if the rest period has been long enough. Just a year difference in battery age shows in many 100ths of a volt.
