in the Sea of Cortez and did have a watermaker. It was worth it's weight in gold.
I can't speak to the Bahamas, but one summer there was a drought and we were giving water to the locals. They lost half of their livestock due to no water. We also gave water to fishermen from time to time. Also, it was nice to know we could shower any time we felt like it. And washing gear in fresh water after a dip prolonged it's life.
BUT, unless you have a lot of wind and solar power at hand, you are trading diesel fuel for water.
