Sailor and boat both from San Diego, involved in "the Islands Race," a 139 mile race that starts in Newport Harbor and goes around Catalina and San Clemente before finishing in San Diego. The 32 foot Columbia Yacht Uncontrollable Urge reported loss of rudder near San Clemente Island, but refused help from CG or race authorities. Apparently they called a salvage operator for a tow, but the operator could not respond due to 8-10 foot waves and small craft advisory in outside waters.
The crew attempted to set an anchor out by San Clemente, but it failed to hold, and the boat was swept onto the beach at the island and broke apart. CG responded at night and rescued the remaining crew of five.
The crew that died was Craig Williams, 36, survived by wife and child.
That is the second local race in which sailors have perished.
