A couple nights ago at dinner I was talking about this loss with a friend who has a Santa Cruz 50. He has a track mounted emergency rudder. When he tested it, the main rudder said, "Nothing doing! I pointed straight so the boat is going straight no matter what that puny emergency rudder says!"

I don't even want to think about real-world scenarios where the primary rudder gets pretzeled or jammed in place.
