The owner had owned a previous version of the Columbia 32 for years and raced that boat to Hawaii with great success. This was the "new and improved" model specifically designed and built to race to Hawaii. They were already signed up for the next Pac Cup.

Also, the builder was onboard.

Things went badly, but it wasn't due to lack of experience.
