Actually looked the same, threaded section that was down into the mixing elbow was no longer connected to the nipple. In my case I thought it was a vibration issue that causeed the shearing? Maybe not though. The difference for me was material, no brass or bronze. When I took the exhaust apart I actually could not identify the material at first. It didn't look like anything in any marine catalog so I went to the home center plumbing section. Nothing there either. I started walkiing around the box store with this ugly sooty thing in a paper towel and finally found what it was. An electrical part. Conduit connector. I guess when Islander installed the Yanmar they used a piece of electrical conduit connector on the wet side of the exhaust mixing elbow. I figured if the first one worked since 1985, I would just replace it. I will be long gone when this one fails.
