In Response To: Time for a new VHF radio. ()

The looked at high end radios and mid-priced units.

I've had ICOM units for years. I've always depended on the and not been let down. I think Standard makes some solid units that get good ratings.

If you are looking at a very basic unit, you have a lot of choices. However, first I'd ask what features? I wouldn't buy a unit that doesn't have DSC and emergency notification. Not only for you, but for others as you become a relay station.

If you want a full function remote at the helm, or elsewhere, that's very convenient. You can get an intercom in the process. (No more yelling up and down )

Then there is a hailer (some with a foghorn too). I haven't found the foghorn too usefull -- but the I haven't found myself anchored or stuck in a place that need that. Under way, ours makes too much nose to listen. However, the hailer can function as a listening device. That can be helpful. If you want avoid yelling when you are trying help someone from going aground, or gettin off, or whatever, they can be helpful -- but hardly as essential as other things.

Remember, the radio is going to last you a long time...
