A long time ago I learned that to paint a galvanized item, like chain or SCUBA tank, you should wipe it with vinegar first, then rise with fresh water. It etches the coating and allows the paint to secure to the metal. It's worked VERY well for me for many years.

I would be VERY leery about soaking for 24 hours!
