We have 300 feet of 3/8" chain. My chain piles up till the windless jambs. We solved the problem (kind of) by putting an additional hawes pipe and cap on deck near where it piles up. When the chain piles up I stick a pipe in the hole (hawes pipe) and knock it down from above deck. Anything strong enough to use as a lever with the hawes pipe as the fulcrum works. It's a lot easier than going below and climbing on the v-berth to get to the anchor locker.

Problem solved.
