I enjoyed the silence, the motion, the sheer feeling of being on the water . . . plus the smell of tarry marline (doesn't that date me!). If we insist on showing sailing as a choice between dodging icebergs in the Volvo or playing crash-a-cat on SF Bay, we're going to turn off thousands of kids/adults who might be more attracted to the possibility of sailing with dolphins or watching the aerobatics of pelicans. I don't get out on the water much these days, but one of my greatest pleasures is rowing the Walker Bay around the in-laws' creek watching the ospreys, the kingfishers, the herons, the bald eagles, the otters! and the swallows nesting under the dock.
