Today Susie took it out in the dinghy as a pseudo depthsounder for placing a crab trap and fishing. The old chart plotter is used with the autopilot mostly one leg at a time, but the iPad with Navionics charts is being zoomed in and out, comparing with the chartplotter and paper charts and for rough route planning and live ETA updates. Very handy.
We use an inexpensive SeaLine waterproof pouch when splashes might happen. A binnacle mount looks better and better however. We often devote a person to holding the iPad for the person at the wheel. The 11 year-old Raymarine system seems so less flexible. It's the touch screen that makes a lot of the difference.
I need to post some photos of the Broughtons. This is our first time here. Gorgeous summer cruising grounds. Greetings from Echo Bay.
