I can't imagine a tight strap working at all. On my spar, that's puts the spar at about 30 degrees out of plumb, but's easy to hold the base(that's a keel stepped mast with an additional 7' of spar below the cabin).

My boat and most I see lift from the forward face of the mast. But we come bow in-to the travelift and the crane on the lift lowers the stick.
