fwiw I've stepped and unstepped a shit pile of rigs and have never lifted with the spreaders... 
In Response To: twice a year argument at the mast stepper ()
... I would rig the strap around the mast above the lower spreaders and tie a line down from the strap to somewhere around some winches, gooseneck or something so the butt of the mast is heavier than the head. Front or back of the rig usually depends on the situation at the time.
To each their own...
PS. Be careful not to kink your lowers.
