While watching the races I reasoned that the reason there's not much attraction in the states is that no one in the race (or at least no one that's interviewed) has a North American accent.

Not having that connection might be why most North Americans aren't really interested in the cup. They need to have at least someone on Oracle's team have interviews that doesn't sound foreign.
