Casco Bay geology

These rocks lie beside the Cribstone Bridge separating Orr's & Bailey Islands. To the right, dark volcanic ash was deposited on top of the older mud sediment on the left. All of it was later turned on its side by plates colliding. The rocks are remnants of an ancient micro-continent named "Avalonia."Our neighbor, a Bowdoin geology professor, is doing a case study on these rocks with her class this year.
