Here is an interesting article on US health care spending

It starts off:

"According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the United States spends a higher portion of its gross domestic product on health care every year than any other country. Yet, the United States ranks 37th out of 191 countries in the WHO's ranking of health care systems. It's difficult to imagine any consumer spending that much more money on a product only to be handed something that ranks 37th in quality." http://people.howstuffworks.com/why-pursue-health-reform1.htm

Wow, now that's a hard pill to swallow!

What's really interesting is that the government health spending per capita (not total spending, just the government spending) is higher in the US than in Canada or most European countries according to this Guardian article so the argument that social health spending is expensive is not necessarily valid. Yes, we in Canada pay health insurance in the form of tax, but not as much as everyone in the US. http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2012/jun/30/healthcare-spending-world-country
