I've wondered about rigging the trysail as well

I installed a separate track that goes to the deck for it when we rigged the mast. This was based on the sloop theory that you could rig it in port and keep it bagged at the base of the mast. On my boat that might not work well for a few reasons: bag right at the bow makes it more vulnerable, mast rotates so bag is either going to be loose or flopping around, sail has to go up the mast past the pusher vang strut. Any trouble at all and I would have to work it out while standing on the bow. My thinking now is that the only utility it would have is if something happened to the main, it would give me a way to sail to a destination. My 3rd reef gets the area down under 300 sq ft in the main and reduces the hoist by more than half, I think less than that I might as well hove to. I had not rigged the 3rd reefing tackle permanently (based on some mistaken advice), but now agree with your sentiment: "am I going to want to rig it in conditions requiring it?" - so I am remedying that..
