Hey Chris,
Yeah, I visited the Exumas 2 years ago, for the first time in awhile... It was pretty shocking how 'overrun' the area between Highborne and Staniel had become by charter megayachts. I knew there was a reason I've favored Eleuthera, Cat Island, Crooked/Acklins and Long Island on most of my Bahamian trips over the years... (grin)
Still, I managed to find a considerable degree of solitude when I was there... I didn't even head over until early March, so I think the key to doing the Exumas might be to do it late... I had a usually popular spot like Allan's Cay mostly to myself for a few days, and there was hardly anyone around Shroud when I was there... (Why anyone would take a mooring at a spot like Shroud Cay is completely beyond me) By the time I made it down around Staniel, I was encountering a lot of boats already headed back north, on their way home...
Hopefully, after this week is over, you'll see the numbers of big charter yachts diminish somewhat... It will spike a bit again around Spring Break - a sign of the times, is that groups of college kids are now making up some of the charter parties on these yachts, at $75K/week, and up...
best regards,
Jon
